Engaging play ideas for creativity during the school holidays!

School holidays are the perfect time to slow down, explore and let creativity shine. At Jesmond Community Preschool, we love encouraging simple, hands on play that sparks imagination and supports children to think in new and exciting ways. With World Creativity and Innovation Day coming up on Tuesday the 21st of April, sensory play is a wonderful way to bring this to life at home!

Sensory play invites children to use their senses to explore textures, colours and movement. It builds creativity, supports problem solving and encourages independent thinking, all while feeling like fun.

Here are a few easy ideas to try at home during the holidays:

Nature sensory trays

Collect leaves, sticks, sand and flowers from the garden or a local park. Place them in a tray and let your child explore, sort and create their own little worlds.

Coloured rice or pasta play

Dye rice or pasta using food colouring and let it dry. Add cups, spoons and small containers for scooping and pouring. This simple activity can turn into hours of imaginative play.

Water play with a twist

Add bubbles, food colouring or even slices of fruit to a tub of water. Children can mix, pour and experiment while developing their creativity.

Playdough creations

Homemade or store bought playdough is always a favourite. Add natural materials, cookie cutters or small toys to inspire new ideas and storytelling.

During the school holidays, it is not about structured activities or perfect outcomes. It is about giving children the space to explore, imagine and create in their own way. These small moments of play can lead to big ideas.

We hope these simple sensory play ideas bring joy, creativity and a little bit of magic into your home these holidays.
